Creating the First Strategic Plan for a Growing HIV Clinic

University of Arizona

Project Years: 2021-2022

The Petersen HIV Clinics (PHC) at the University of Arizona provide specialty HIV care and prevention treatment in southern Arizona. In 2021, PHC was serving about 1,000 patients per year, and had experienced substantial growth and leadership transition over the past few years. As their staff and patient caseload grew, they recognized a need for a first-ever strategic plan to guide their future work together.

In late 2021, Facente Consulting began a strategic process with PHC, including interviews with ten key staff, interviews with representatives of partner agencies in the region, and development of a landscape analysis report. We then held a two-day all-staff retreat in Tucson, where we developed a mission and vision statement, discussed key issues related to their rapid growth, and facilitated activities to cultivate a cohesive team environment that promotes both high performance and job satisfaction. This was followed by four strategic planning committee meetings in 2022 to discuss core strategies for future work and strategic priorities to carry this out, culminating in a final strategic plan released with a community launch event held in November 2022.
