Qualitative Analysis of Training Needs for Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgeons

AO Foundation

Project Years: 2018-2019

The AO Foundation is a nonprofit organization focused on research, development, and education that improve the care of patients who have experienced musculoskeletal injuries or pathologies. In 2018, the AO Foundation was interested in determining the best communication channels for educational content to train cranio-maxillofacial (CMF) surgeons around the world, including in settings with very limited resources. The AO Foundation conducted interviews with 92 CMF surgeons worldwide and hired Facente Consulting to analyze and summarize qualitative interview data.

Facente Consulting developed a codebook to support interview analysis, leading to the identification of key themes related to CMF surgeon training needs and preferences. Facente Consulting then prepared a PowerPoint slide deck of preliminary findings that could be used to update the AO Foundation board of directors on study progress. Finally, Facente Consulting prepared the methods and findings sections of a manuscript for peer-reviewed publication, which emphasized the preferences of CMF surgeons around technology and communications platforms that might be used to improve surgical skills.
